GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College lacrosse team jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the University of Richmond, but the Spiders rallied to post a 20-15 victory on Boswell Field in Atlantic 10 Conference action this afternoon. UR posted its third straight win to improve to 8-4 overall, 3-1 in the A10, while the Statesmen slip to 5-7 overall, 1-3 in the conference.
Hobart’s offense was led by sophomore midfielder John Jude Considine’s season-high four goals. Senior attackman Troy Barthelme and sophomore attackman Will Delano each finished with a team-high five points. Barthelme had three goals and two assists, while Delano notched a goal and shared game-high honors with four assists. Senior faceoff specialists Adam Shea was 22-of-39 at the X with a game-high 16 ground balls.
Richmond got a game-high eight points from attackman Dalton Young, who scored four goals and assisted on four more. Attackmen Luke Grayum (4g, 1a) and Aidan O’Neil (2g, 3a) added five points apiece. Midfielder Derrek Madonna scored four times. In goal, Zach Vigue made 15 saves against 29 shots on goal to earn the win.
FAST START
- Richmond had an extended offensive possession early in the game, but Hobart goalie Elhanan Wilson (12 svs) recorded four saves to keep the game scoreless.
- After the defense was able to force the Spiders into a shot clock violation, the Statesmen cleared the ball and Considine cashed in for the early lead.
- Two minutes later, graduate student long-stick midfielder Mark Synnott fed sophomore attackman Alex Rosa who fired home his 15th goal of the season.
- Hobart scored twice more in just over a minute, with Rosa and Barthelme hitting the back of the net, both set up by Delano.
MOMENTUM SHIFT
- Young got the visitors on the board with back-to-back goals as UR whittled the Statesmen lead down to 6-4 by the end of the first quarter.
- Barthelme scored the final goal of the first quarter and Delano, assisted by Barthelme opened the second quarter scoring. Hobart didn’t score back-to-back goals again until the final three minutes of the game.
- Hobart led 8-5 after Synnott scored just over four minutes into the second quarter, but Richmond responded with a game-changing 11-2 run that put the Spiders firmly in control of the game.
KEY STATS
- Richmond outshot Hobart 51-47, including 45-32 through the first three quarters.
- The Spiders had the advantage in ground balls 41-28.
- Hobart converted 2-of-6 extra-man opportunities, while Richmond was 0-for-1.
