The Keuka College Women’s Volleyball team was swept on their home floor on Saturday by Nazareth University at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.
Nina Scott (Honeoye Falls, N.Y. / Honeoye Falls-Lima) led Keuka College (5-14, 1-6 Empire 8) attack with nine kills. Jessica Throop (Grant, Mich. / Grant) had a team-high seven digs.
Nazareth University 3 at Keuka College 0 – 25-13, 25-14, 25-22
The Golden Flyers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead over the Wolves. Nina Scott stopped the run with Keuka’s first point, but Nazareth responded with two more for the 8-1 advantage. The Wolves could not get back into the set and lost the opener 25-13.
Keuka College kept it close early in the second set. A block by Bryn Straub (Irondequoit, N.Y. / Irondequoit) gave the Wolves an 8-7 lead. However, that was answered by five points from Nazareth. That sparked an 18-6 run for the visitors to close the set and take a 2-0 lead.
The two teams traded points to start the third set. A kill by Scott tied the set at 10-10, but five unanswered points shifted the lead to the Golden Flyers. An error by Nazareth gave the serve back to the Wolves at 14-19. Summer Elza (Goodyear, Ariz. / The Odyssey Institute of Advanced and International Studies) took the ball and immediately hit an ace. Her serve kept Nazareth off balanced and the Wolves were able to go on a 7-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. Nazareth snapped the run to tie the set at 20-20. After trading points, the Golden Flyers took the lead, and a pair of Nazareth kills ended the match with the Golden Flyers winning the final set 25-22.
KC Notes:
- Saturday was the 50th meeting between Keuka College and Nazareth University. The series started in 1975, and the Golden Flyers have a 38-12 lead
- The Green and Gold struggled on offense. They had 20 kills against 23 errors, hitting in the negative for the first time since their match against Nazareth in September 2022
- Bryn Straub tied her season-high with three total blocks, but it was the first time that all three blocks were the solo variety
- Straub also surpassed 200 kills for her career in the match
- Casey Hunziker (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) had 15 assists in the match. With her performance over the past two games, Hunziker moved to third on the career assists list for Keuka College Women’s Volleyball. She now has 2,576, passing Alyssa Rex ’19
Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves remain in Empire 8 play next weekend as Keuka College plays a pair of games on the road. Keuka will be at Hartwick College on Friday and then at Russell Sage College on Saturday.
