Cayuga Community College Women’s Basketball couldn’t climb out of a double-digit halftime deficit in a home loss to Genesee Community College on Wednesday.
The Spartans trailed by 14 at halftime but cut the lead to single-digits in the fourth quarter before losing to the Cougars, 66-56. Cayuga is now 6-9 on the season and 4-7 in Region III.
“We didn’t play well offensively in the first half. We got ourselves behind, but then played much better in the second half of the game,” said Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici. “I’m proud of our effort to get back into the game. We just couldn’t quite catch up.”
Cayuga’s offense struggled in the first two quarters, with Genesee building a double-digit lead in the first frame and carrying it through the second to lead 33-19 at halftime.
The Spartans’ offense came alive in the third and fourth quarters. Cayuga briefly cut the Cougars’ lead to eight on two free throws by Xavia Evener, then later in the third quarter cut the lead again to single digits on a layup by Haley Mosch. In the fourth, a Mosch three-pointer cut the lead to six, but Cayuga was unable to complete the comeback and catch Genesee.
Mosch finished with 32 points, 10 rebounds and three steals, and Evener had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Lexi Alberici had eight assists and two steals.
The Spartans’ next game is away Saturday, January 25, at Onondaga Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
