In their first game of December, Cayuga Community College Women’s Basketball stayed close with Monroe Community College before falling at home on Tuesday.
Despite Haley Mosch’s second 30-point performance of the season, the Spartans ended up on the wrong end of a 76-55 final. The game is Cayuga’s only home contest of the month.
The Spartans played well against their second Division II opponent of the season, said Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici.
“We played really hard and hung in there against a very talented team. We executed our offense well, but we have to shoot the ball better from the paint and the foul line,” he said. “We have to finish more of those. But we’re playing a lot better basketball now than we were earlier this season. You can see our progress each game.”
Mosch powered the Spartans’ offense early, scoring all but three of Cayuga’s first quarter points and accounting for 20 of the team’s first 25 points. Despite her strong offensive performance in the first and second quarters, Cayuga trailed 44-27 at halftime.
The Spartans’ defense started strong in the third quarter, holding the Tribunes scoreless for the first four minutes and cutting the lead to 11. That was as close as Cayuga came, though, as the Tribunes ended the third quarter on an extended run and played the Spartans even in the fourth.
Mosch had 11 rebounds, five steals and a block to go with 33 points, one point shy of matching her season high. Lexi Alberici had eight assists, Xavia Evener had seven points and six rebounds, and Sierra Murray had six points and six rebounds.
Cayuga is away both days this weekend before breaking for the remainder of December. They’re at Hudson Valley Community College on Saturday, Dec. 7, and at SUNY Adirondack on Sunday. The game against Hudson Valley starts at 1 p.m.
