Midlakes’ girls varsity wrestling team scored a landmark team victory in this weekend’s Hunter-Leone Tournament, hosted by Penfield High School.

The Screaming Eagles took first overall in the team scoring, securing the championship with an overall 154.5 points.

Individually, three Midlakes freestylers won championships in their weight class.

Sophomore Abbigail Hargarther scored a quick pinfall win at 114 lbs, while eighth-grader Julionna Carrasquel took the win by pinfall at 132 lbs. Eighth-grader Lizzy Boughton added a third championship by way of pinfall at 145 lbs.

Additionally, Leah Peck, a senior, took runner-up honors at 132 lbs. Sophomore Suelyan Serrano Rosa posted a third at 126 lbs, and Clara Bond, a junior, earned third at 145 lbs. Sophomores Olivia Thorpe (120) and Kenzie Turner (126) joined freshman Miley Smith (152) in contributing to the team effort, taking fourth in their respective weight classes.

The team has seen exponential growth in the last year. On January 23, 2024, Midlakes hosted their first all-female dual meet, facing off against powerhouse Fulton High School.

This season, the team is competing as a separate team from the boys program, participating in all-female dual matches and tournaments. The team is gaining momentum at the right time. The collective highlight of the season is on the horizon; Midlakes Athletics and the girls’ varsity wrestling team will soon host the first all-female wrestling tournament in school history.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. December 28, with more than 20 schools and over 200 student-athletes looking to claim gold at the tournament. The freestyle action will be contested across four mats in the high school and middle school gymnasiums. Finals will be contested in the high school gym.
