Michigan Holds Off Upset-Minded Hobart Lax

For 40 minutes, the Hobart lacrosse team stood toe-to-toe with No. 17 Michigan, holding an 8-5 lead with five minutes remaining in the third quarter. However, the Wolverines were able to avoid the upset by scoring 10 of the game’s final 11 goals.

Senior attackman Alex Rosa led the Statesmen with four goals. Classmates Will Delano and John Jude Considine added two goals apiece. Junior midfielder David Peterkin had a team-high two assists. Graduate student Cole Emmanuel won 12-of-20 faceoffs and grabbed a game-high eight ground balls. Senior defenseman Nolan Firth added seven ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Jackson Faiola made 10 saves, including five in the third quarter.

Michigan got a game-high six points on four goals and two assists from senior midfielder Aidan Mulholland. Sophomore attackman Jack Jenkins also scored four goals. Senior attackman Ryan Cohen added a goal and a game-high four assists. Graduate defenseman Pace Billings collected a team-high seven ground balls, while junior defenseman Mason Whitney logged a game-high three caused turnovers. Junior goalie Hunter Taylor made seven saves to get the win.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Delano opened the scoring with an extra-man goal less than two minutes in off a feed from Peterkin.
  • Michigan equalized less than a minute later, starting a 3-1 run that gave the visitors a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes.

SECOND QUARTER

  • The Statesmen controlled the second quarter, outscoring the Wolverines 4-1.
  • Considine and Rosa scored in succession to regain the lead.
  • After Michigan scored to tie the game at 4 midway through the frame, Rosa struck twice in the final three minutes of the half, the second one was man-up for a 6-4 halftime lead.

THIRD QUARTER

  • The Wolverines got the first goal after the break when Mulholland set the table for Jenkins.
  • Hobart answered with back-to-back goals by Delano and Considine.
  • The latter goal started behind the Michigan cage. Considine got inside position on his defender and leaped across the crease, scoring his third goal of the season for an 8-5 Hobart lead with 5:41 left in the quarter.
  • Jenkins helped Michigan regain the momentum with back-to-back goals two minute apart and Lukas Stanat tied the game heading into the final frame.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • In the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, Mulholland scored twice and graduate attackman Will Byrne added a goal for an 11-8 Michigan lead.
  • About midway through the quarter, senior Braeden Wimer fired a shot from the right side that appeared to go in the goal, but Taylor scooped up the ball on goal line extended just outside the far post. The call stood after video review.
  • Michigan put the game away with four of the final five goals.
  • Rosa’s final goal of the day was his team-leading ninth of the season and was assisted by Firth.
