The William Smith field hockey team suffered a 4-1 defeat to visiting Messiah on McCooey Field Saturday afternoon.
Heron starting goalie, sophomore Baker Jeremiah, made a career-high nine saves in 45 minutes of work. First-year Olivia Terranova played the final 15 minutes, making one save. Senior Kristen Newman scored the William Smith goal.
Aubrey Clark and Audrey Weger led the Falcons with a goal and an assist apiece. Ellie Lefever and Kenzie Feeney also scored. Goalie Joy Lippert made four saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first quarter, the teams were evenly matched. Both teams generated four shots, putting three on frame.
- William Smith had the first scoring chance when graduate student Rebecca Mantione broke in on goal, but Lippert saved the opening-minute shot.
- Just over a minute into the second quarter, Messiah broke through when Aubrey dribbled along the end line from the left side and scored on a shot from right in front of the cage.
- The Falcons took the 1-0 lead into the break.
- The visitors broke the game open in the third quarter.
- Ellie Lefever doubled Messiah’s advantage 54 seconds into the second half.
- Weger scored off a feed from Clark in the 40th minute to make it 3-0 and then Weger set up Feeney in the final minute of the quarter.
- In the 49th minute, Leah Griffith fired a long vertical pass to Newman at the top of the circle. Newman was met by Lippert almost immediately. The keeper did make contact with the ball, but wasn’t able to dispossess Newman. She was also to recollect the ball and fire a shot into the open net.
ON THE HORIZON
- William Smith (5-5) will return to McCooey Field for its next match Friday, Oct. 3. The Herons will open Liberty League play against St. Lawrence (3-4, 0-1).
