Three members of the Hobart football team were recognized by the Liberty League for their role in the Statesmen’s 27-0 win over Union on Saturday. Junior punter Vicente Lyon (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown, N.Y.) was named the Special Teams Performer of the Week for the second time this season. Senior linebacker Anthony Romano (Methuen/Methuen, N.Y.) and sophomore running back E.J. Taylor (Salon/Salon, Ohio) were both named to the league’s weekly honor roll.
Lyon punted five times for 237 yards Saturday. He launched two punts that traveled over 50 yards (51 & 55 yds), giving him a league-leading eight on the season. His final punt of the game was a 55-yarder that pinned the Garnet Chargers inside their own 20. Lyon’s 47.4 yard punting average in the game is his second highest of the season, trailing only his record-breaking 65-yard average against Ithaca. He leads the Liberty League and is seventh in the nation in punting average (42.8).
Romano made a team-high eight tackles, including a game-high two tackles for loss, as the Statesmen shut out the Garnet Chargers for the first time since 1975. Hobart limited Union, which came into the game averaging 162.8 yards rushing per game, to just 41 yards on the ground.
A starter in all eight games this season, Romano is second on the team and 10th in the league in tackles with 59. He’s third on the team and ninth in the league in tackles for loss with 6.5. Romano has played in 41 career games at Hobart, compiling 248 tackles, 26.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, and five interceptions. He is 13th on Hobart’s career tackles list.
Taylor produced his second 100-yard rushing game of the season, turning a season-high 26 carries into a game-high 140 yards and two touchdowns. He opened the game’s scoring with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone on the game’s opening drive. Taylor also capped the day’s scoring, breaking loose for a 29-yard touchdown run.
Taylor, who has started all eight games this season, is tied for the Liberty League lead with six rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns with seven. He is second in rushing yards with 744.
Hobart, which is receiving votes in both the AFCA coaches poll and the D3football.com poll, will make its final road trip of the regular season Saturday, Nov. 2. The Statesmen will visit RPI (3-4, 1-2) for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
