The Keuka College women’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season Monday night, defeating the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford 65-50 at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.
First-year guard Courtney Moreau of Brasher Falls led all scorers with 17 points while adding five assists and two steals. Fellow first-year player Emilee Bacon of Buffalo recorded her first career double-double, finishing with 12 points and a team-high 12 rebounds for the Wolves, who evened their record at 1-1.
After Pitt-Bradford opened the game with a quick 4-0 lead, Keuka tied it in a matter of seconds on a steal by Maddie Kramer and a layup from Moreau. The Panthers regained the advantage briefly, but the Wolves closed the first quarter on an 8-0 run, capped by a jumper from Bacon to take a 17-14 lead.
Keuka carried that momentum into the second quarter, extending its lead behind strong play from Moreau and Bacon. A last-second basket from Brooke Burd gave the Wolves a 40-29 lead at halftime.
The Green and Gold maintained control in the second half. A late offensive rebound and layup from Bacon pushed the margin to 13, and a three-pointer from Courtney Merlo helped Keuka take a 53-40 lead into the fourth quarter. The Wolves put the game away from there, outscoring the Panthers 12-10 in the final period.
Keuka was led by a balanced effort, with Emiley Anderson adding eight points, a career best, and Kramer contributing four steals. Burd also grabbed 10 rebounds as the Wolves outrebounded Pitt-Bradford 46-43 and dominated in transition, outscoring the Panthers 25-4 on the break.
The win was Keuka’s second straight against Pitt-Bradford, improving their all-time record against the Panthers to 7-10.
Up next, the Wolves will look to make it two in a row when they host Fredonia State at 7 p.m. Friday. Keuka is 8-5 all-time against the Blue Devils, though Fredonia has won the last two meetings.
