The Keuka College Women’s Volleyball team fought hard but fell in five sets against SUNY Geneseo in Empire 8 Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Nina Scott (Honeoye Falls, N.Y. / Honeoye Falls-Lima) led the Wolves with a team-high 22 kills, while Casey Hunziker (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) recorded 44 assists and 5 service aces to pace Keuka’s offense.
Keuka started the match with early momentum, taking a 3-1 lead following a kill by Nina Scott and an attack error by Geneseo. The Wolves built on their advantage, extending the score to 10-2 after a strong run that included back-to-back kills from Scott and a service ace by Hunziker. However, Geneseo responded with a series of kills and capitalized on Keuka’s attack errors The Wolves carried that momentum to the finish line to take set one 25-17.
The second set saw Keuka College surge to an early lead once again. Kills from Dayna Edholm (Buffalo, N.Y. / Sweet Home) and Scott helped Keuka jump ahead 7-4. The Wolves continued their aggressive play, with Scott delivering multiple kills. However, Geneseo applied pressure from the service line and capitalized on Keuka receive errors. The Knights took set two 25-17 and tied the match 1-1.
SUNY Geneseo regained the upper hand in the third set, taking an early lead and holding off several Keuka rallies. Despite efforts from Scott at the net and service aces from Hunziker and Jessica Throop, Geneseo’s balanced attack proved too much, as they closed out the set 25-18 to take a 2-1 match lead.
Keuka battled back in the fourth set, going on multiple runs. Edholm took control from the front row to contribute to the Wolves’ offensive success, gaining an 18-10 lead. Geneseo closed the gap, but Keuka held on, winning the set 25-22 and forcing a decisive fifth set.
The final set was tightly contested, with both teams exchanging leads. Keuka edged ahead 13-10 after a kill by Scott and an ace from Edholm. However, Geneseo mounted a comeback, taking advantage of Keuka errors to win the set 15-13 and secure the match 3-2.
