Keuka College Women’s Volleyball competed in a tri-match on Saturday afternoon with matches against Skidmore College and SUNY Cobleskill. The Wolves lost 3-0 to Skidmore in the first match and dropped the second match 3-1 against SUNY Cobleskill.
The Keuka offense was led by setter Casey Hunziker (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) on Saturday, combining for 60 assists across the two matches. Fellow graduate student Dayna Edholm (Buffalo, N.Y. / Sweet Home) contributed to the offensive success as well with 27 kills and three service aces.
Skidmore College 3 vs. Keuka College 0 | 25-20, 25-22, 25-23
The first set saw both teams exchanging points early, but errors by Keuka allowed Skidmore to pull ahead. The Wolves tried to close the gap with key kills from Dayna Edholm and Nina Scott (Honeoye Falls, N.Y. / Honeoye Falls-Lima), but Skidmore held their advantage and finished the set 25-20.
In the second set, Keuka took an early lead with kills from Lilah Cousins (Denver, Colo. / Westminster) and Sydney Haust (Senenca Falls, N.Y. / Mynderse Academy). Skidmore quickly responded, and despite service aces from Gabby Rodriguez (Floresville, Texas / Floresville) and Edholm and key offensive played from Edholm, Keuka lost the set 25-22.
The third set was the closest, with both teams tied at multiple points. Edholm and Scott kept Keuka in the game, but Skidmore edged ahead in the final moments, winning the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
SUNY Cobleskill 3 vs. Keuka College 1 | 9-25, 25-18, 25-19, 27-25
Keuka College jumped out to a fast start in the first set, capitalizing on Cobleskill errors and building an early lead with strong serving from Jessica Throop (Grant, Mich. / Grant) and key kills from Edholm. The Wolves controlled the set with kills from across the roster. Keuka closed out the set 25-9.
The second set was a tighter affair, with both teams trading points. Keuka managed to grab a brief lead thanks to kills from Gabby Fenton (Buckeye, Ariz. / The Odyssey Institute of Advanced and International Studies) and Nina Scott, but Cobleskill took advantage of several Keuka errors to swing the momentum back in their favor, eventually winning the set 25-18.
Keuka found their rhythm in the third set, led by the offense of Bryn Straub (Irondequoit, N.Y. / Irondequoit) and Nina Scott. Despite the strong offensive presence, the Fighting Tigers had a response and won set three 25-19.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle. Keuka took an early lead with contributions from Edholm and Haust, but Cobleskill fought back. Both teams exchanged points deep into the set, with neither side gaining a significant advantage. Despite Keuka reaching set point, Cobleskill managed to rally and edged out the Wolves 27-25 to win the match.
Up Next for Keuka College: The Green and Gold will return to their home court for the first single game of the season. The Wolves will host the University of Rochester on Wednesday, September 25 in a non-conference matchup.
