The Keuka College Women’s Volleyball team dropped a four-set match against Alfred University on Saturday in Empire 8 Conference action.
Graduate student Dayna Edholm (Buffalo, N.Y. / Sweet Home) paced the Wolves’ offense with 13 kills, while libero Gabby Rodriguez (Floresville, Texas / Floresville) held things down on the defensive side with 16 digs.
Keuka College opened the match with a service error by Alfred, but the Saxons quickly tied it up. Both teams traded points early before a kill by Nina Scott (Honeoye Falls, N.Y. / Honeoye Falls-Lima) and back-to-back errors by Alfred gave Keuka a slim lead at 7-5. The set remained close, but Keuka continued their momentum mid-set, pulling ahead to 19-11 after a series with aces from Casey Hunziker (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) and kills from Scott. Alfred tried to rally, cutting the deficit to 23-20 but Keuka closed the set at 25-21.
Keuka College came out swinging in the second set, jumping to a 2-0 lead behind kills from Edholm and Bryn Straub (Irondequoit, N.Y. / Irondequoit). The Wolves and Saxons remained neck and neck until Alfred pulled away midway through the set, capitalizing on Keuka’s errors to build a 20-14 lead. Despite strong offensive efforts from Edholm and Straub, the Wolves were unable to catch up, and Alfred took the second set 25-19.
The Wolves came out aggressive in the third set, with Edholm leading the charge. Keuka built an early 9-5 with Maddy Drake (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) contributing with two kills. However, Alfred responded, tying the set at 9-9. The Saxons then pulled ahead with several key kills to take control, securing the set 25-20 and moving to a 2-1 match lead.
In the final set, Alfred dominated from the start, quickly building a 7-2 lead. Keuka struggled to find their footing as Alfred’s relentless attack extended their lead to 18-6. The Wolves fought back late in the set, but it was not enough to stop Alfred from closing out the set 25-11 and securing the 3-1 victory.
