Keuka Men’s Soccer Falls to Brockport in Empire 8 Matchup

SHARE NOW

Playing for the first time as members of the Empire 8 Conference, the Keuka College Men’s Soccer team lost at home to SUNY Brockport 3-1 on Saturday.

Keuka College (0-5, 0-2 Empire 8) got its goal from first-year defender Patrick Mucha (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford). Cory Cangemi (Marcellus, N.Y. / Marcellus) made nine saves in the loss.

The Wolves were able to get an early corner opportunity on Saturday but were unable to generate a goal. The play flipped with SUNY Brockport applying pressure. Cory Cangemi made a nice falling save on the near post in the 21st minute, but the Golden Eagles broke through two minutes later for the 1-0 lead. Another good defensive play was made by the Wolves prior to another Brockport goal. Liam Fitzpatrick (Brockport, N.Y. / Brockport) made a nice play to clear the ball off the line, but Brockport added their second goal minutes later. The visitors led 2-0 at the half.

In the second half, Brockport continued to possess and attack Keuka. Cangemi showed his reflexes as he made a point-blank save off of a volley by Brockport. On the subsequent buildup for the Wolves, a foul gave Keuka a free kick from 20 yards out. Patrick Mucha stepped up and his right-footed shot curved around the wall and tucked inside the right post to make it 2-1. The Wolves played with life following the goal. They nearly tied it in the 70th minute from a long throw. The ball came into the box and Corey Hamilton (Falkirk, Scotland / Columbia) got a head to it, but Brockport’s keeper had the near post covered for the save. The Golden Eagles reestablished their two-goal lead in the 79th minute. The final ten had another good Keuka opportunity on a header, and another nice save by Cangemi, but the Wolves were unable to cut into the margin as they fell 3-1 to Brockport.

KC Notes:

  • Keuka College is now 2-9 all-time against Brockport
  • Saturday was the first meeting between the two schools since the 2004 season and Mucha’s tally was Keuka’s first goal against Brockport since a 2-1 victory in 1998
  • Cangemi has now made nine saves in back-to-back games. He passed Derek Condon ‘12 for eighth on the career saves list at Keuka College with 153
  • The Golden Eagles had the edge in shots 24-6 but the corner kick opportunities were much closer at 11-5 Brockport

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves step out of Empire 8 play on Tuesday and take a trip north to face SUNY Canton in a non-conference game. Keuka will remain on the road next weekend playing at Empire 8 foe Nazareth University on Saturday.
