The Keuka College Baseball team opened their Empire 8 Conference schedule while in Florida against SUNY Brockport.
SUNY Brockport 9 vs. Keuka College 3 – Game 1
SUNY Brockport used a five-run second inning to take the lead over the Wolves.
The Wolves got one back their second time through the order. Kyle Wood (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) had a two-out double off the left field wall to start the rally. Derek Novicki (North Haven, Conn. / North Haven) followed with a single to center to make it 5-1. Carlos Fantauzzi (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) followed with a single, but the pair would be stranded.
The Golden Eagles plated four in the sixth inning. The Wolves responded with a pair in the bottom of the frame as Alex Solema (Wintersville, Ohio / Steubenville Catholic Central) had a two-run single up the middle. However, Brockport would escape the inning and close it out in the seventh, defeating Keuka College 9-3 in game one.
SUNY Brockport 16 vs. Keuka College 3 (7 inn.) – Game 2
The Golden Eagles took the lead in the top of the first, but the Wolves answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Lewandowski (Milltown, N.J. / Spotswood) led off with a walk and stole second. He then scored on a Brockport error to tie the game.
The score would hold until the fourth. Brockport scored nine in the top of the inning to take control of the game. Keuka looked to respond and got singles by Fantauzzi and Novicki, but a double play ended the threat.
Brockport would extend their lead to 16-1 going into the seventh inning. Mike Dutch (Manlius, N.Y. / Fayetteville-Manlius) singled for the Wolves and Matthew Rugolo (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Farmingdale) followed with a hit of his own. They both scored on a single from Ethan Drinon (Middleburgh, N.Y. / Schoharie), but the Wolves would fall to the Golden Eagles 16-3.
KC Notes:
- Keuka College falls to 0-6 all-time against SUNY Brockport. It was the first time the two teams met as conference opponents
- Derek Novicki had a pair of singles, run scored, and a run driven in in game one
- Kyle Wood doubled and scored two of Keuka’s three runs in the opener
- Danny Swift (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Fayetteville-Manlius) threw 1.2 perfect innings for the Wolves in relief in game one. The first year struck out a pair
- In game two, Ethan Drinon led with a single, a double, and two RBIs
- The single by Matthew Rugolo was the first of his collegiate career
- Kyle Wood did not have a hit in game two after recording a hit for the first 11 games of the season. Dating back to last year, his hitting streak spanned 13 games ranking as the fourth-longest in program history
