Hobart junior punter Vicente Lyon (Yorktown/Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) picked up his second double of the season when he was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week today. He was named the Liberty League Special Teams Player of the Week yesterday for his efforts against Union. Lyon also earned both honors following the Ithaca game earlier this month.
Lyon averaged 47.4 yards per punt on Saturday, his second-highest average of the season (Ithaca 65.0). His punts covered 38, 49, 51, 44 and 55 yards. Lyon now has a Liberty League-leading eight punts of 50 yards or more, including his 86-yarder against Ithaca which is the longest punt in NCAA football this season. His 55-yard punt in the fourth quarter against Union, pinned the Garnet Chargers inside their own 20.
The Statesmen shut out Union 27-0. It was Hobart’s first shutout of the Garnet Chargers since 1975.
Lyon has played in all eight games this season, averaging 42.8 yards per punt. He leads the Liberty League and is seventh in the nation in punting average. As a team, Hobart paces the conference and is fifth in the country in net punting at 39.97 yards.
Hobart has won six in a row to improve to 7-1 overall. The Statesmen are alone in first place in the Liberty League with a 4-0 record with two games remaining. Hobart is receiving votes in both national polls and ranked 24th in the NPI rankings heading into Saturday’s conference match-up at RPI (3-4, 1-2). NPI is the NCAA’s new system for selecting the 12 at-large bids to the 40-team NCAA Division III Football Championship.
