Stephen Brundage has been named the 20th head coach of Hobart lacrosse. Hobart and William Smith Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian Miller made the announcement on Thursday.
Brundage has spent the past five seasons on the Statesmen coaching staff. Miller said he most recently served as the Moses Family Associate Head Coach of Lacrosse and brings a bold vision, proven leadership and a deep commitment to the program’s legacy of grit, resilience and excellence.
“Stephen’s vision for the program and his energy around how to execute it truly set him apart from an exceptionally strong pool of candidates,” says Miller. “He’s ready to lead Hobart lacrosse into the future while honoring the tradition of overachieving, tough-minded teams that define our history. His overall philosophy and tactical strategy for recruitment and player development will have a powerful and positive impact on our student-athletes and the program.”
Brundage has helped guide the Statesmen to national prominence in scoring during his tenure. In four of his five seasons, Hobart ranked among the top 25 offenses in Division I, including leading the nation in goals per game in 2020 (19.6) and ranking 10th in 2022 (14.08). Under his guidance, the extra-man unit has also excelled, ranking fifth in the nation in 2020 and 17th in 2023. During his tenure, he has coached 10 all-conference honorees – five attackmen and five midfielders.
“I’m grateful to Brian Miller, the search committee, and the members of the HWS community engaged in this process,” says Brundage. “This is a special place that has had a profound impact on me since the day I arrived. I’m honored and excited to lead this program and meet the high expectations that come with one of the most historic names in college lacrosse.”
Before joining Hobart, Brundage served for seven seasons at Marquette University, including five as associate head coach. There, he helped transform the Golden Eagles from a first-year program into a BIG EAST champion and NCAA Tournament contender, leading the team to five conference tournament appearances and two NCAA berths (2016, 2017). He coached six USILA All-Americans and 27 All-BIG EAST selections.
His earlier coaching stops include Drexel University and Princeton University, where he helped lead the Tigers to the 2010 Ivy League Championship.
“Stephen’s passion for Hobart and his competitive fire were unmistakable from the moment the search process began,” says Eric Stein ’89, who served on the committee. “He brings a winning mindset and a clear understanding of the opportunities ahead. We’re thrilled to have him at the helm.”
As a player, Brundage was a two-time All-America honorable mention attackman at Loyola University Maryland, where he racked up 143 points on 88 goals and 55 assists. He led the Greyhounds in points three times, served as a two-time MVP, and helped the team reach the 2001 NCAA Quarterfinals. He graduated in 2005 with a degree in marketing.
A native of Camillus, Brundage was a two-sport standout at West Genesee High School, graduating second all-time in scoring for both lacrosse and hockey.
Brundage inherits a promising roster, with 36 players returning, including All-Atlantic 10 selections David Peterkin ’26 and Mike Valent ’27. Hobart finished the 2024 season ranked fourth nationally in faceoff percentage (.629).
Miller and Brundage will soon launch a national search to identify the next Moses Family Associate Head Coach of Hobart Lacrosse.
