The Hobart lacrosse team opened its 123rd season with a 21-12 win over Canisius on Stiles Field in the Poole Family Dome. Eleven different Statesmen found the back of the next led by senior attackman Alex Rosa’s career-high five goals.
Senior Will Delano also fired home a career-high for goals, notching four against the Golden Griffins. Junior midfielder David Peterkin also recorded four points on a goal and a team-high three assists. Junior attackman Connor DiTamasso logged his first career hat trick. Sophomores Tye Steenhuis (2g,1a) and Mike Valent (1g,2a) also enjoyed three-point games. Sophomore Jackson Faiola made seven saves to pick up the win.
Senior attackman TJ Buono scored three times to lead Canisius. Sophomore attackman Mason Wolford added two goals and an assist. Junior Micah Hanson was 12-of-31 on faceoffs, collected a game-high eight ground balls and scored a fourth-quarter goal. Senior Tommy Kunz got the start in goal, making 10 saves in three quarters of work. First-year Brady Robinson made one stop in 15 minutes of relief.
FACE FACTS
- Hobart used four different faceoff specialists to win 23-of-35 faceoffs (.657). All four Statesmen finished at or above .500 in winning percentage.
- Graduate student Cole Emmanuel won 12-of-18 at the X, grabbed a team-high seven ground balls and handed out a pair of assists.
- Valent was 7-of-11 on faceoffs.

- Hobart’s extra-man offense converted on 4-of-5 opportunities.
- The Statesmen man-down unit, which ranked 15th in the nation last season, killed off 3-of-4 chances for Canisius.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hobart put the first two goals of the season up on the board in quick succession when Will Delano’s extra-man goal was followed by an even-strength tally by Valent just 20 seconds later.
- Canisius scored four of the next five goals to take their only lead of the day. Junior Lance Williams netted both of his goals in the game back-to-back to give the visitors a 4-3 edge with just over a minute left in the opening quarter.
- Senior midfielder John Jude Considine tied the game before the first 15 minutes expired.
- The teams alternated goals, forging ties at 5 and 6, before the Statesmen scored twice in the final 35 seconds.
- Delano struck first followed by junior Cade Dino’s first career goal just 22 seconds later.
TURNING POINT
- Hobart took control of the game, exploding for nine goals in the third quarter.
- The Statesmen posted three extra-man goals during the frame.
- Rosa scored three times and Delano tallied twice in the decisive quarter.
- Hobart scored five of the first six goals of the half to open a 13-7 lead.
- The Statesmen ended the quarter on a four-goal run, including two extra-man goals by Rosa.
