Three Hobart football players earned weekly honors from the Liberty League this afternoon. Senior linebacker Anthony Romano (Methuen/Methuen, Mass.) was named the Co-Defensive Performer of the Week, junior punter Vicente Lyon (Yorktown/Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was tabbed the Special Teams Performer of the Week and first-year defensive tackle Billy Brosko (Haverford School/Newtown Square, Pa.) picked up his second Rookie of the Week award in as many games.
Hobart went on the road to face then No. 8 Randolph-Macon, a 2023 NCAA semifinalist, on Saturday. The Statesmen scored first and went into halftime tied at 7 with the Yellow Jackets. The game remained tied through regulation, with the home team avoiding the upset 14-7 in overtime.
Romano led the Hobart defense with 10 tackles, including two for loss and a sack. Brosko added five tackles. Together with their teammates, they limited RMC to 208 yards of offense, just 65 rushing and 143 passing. It’s the fewest passing yards the Yellow Jackets have produced since Oct. 30, 2018, and the fewest rushing yards and fewest total yards since Nov. 24, 2018.
Through two games this season, Romano has 12 tackles, 2.5 for loss and a sack. In 35 career games, he has 201 total tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks. Romano is the 28th player in program history to record at least 200 career tackles. He is currently tied for 25th place with Rich Barlette ’01, Andrew Klindera ’13 and Bryan Aguilar ’22.
Two games into his Hobart career, Brosko has 12 tackles, including three for loss.
Lyon punted seven times on Saturday for 279 yards, an average of 39.9 yards per punt. His longest kick of the day traveled 50 yards.
Through two games, Lyon leads the Liberty League in punting average (39.3) and in punts of 50 yards or more (2). In 12 career games, he is averaging 37.3 yards per punt with eight punts of 50 or more yards and 13 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.
Hobart (1-1) will return to Boswell Field at Urick Stadium to host Moravian (1-1) in the first meeting between the two programs. The Statesmen and Greyhounds will kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21.
Former Hobart Head Coach Mike Cragg will be the honored guest at the game. The program’s career leader in coaching wins with 157 across 23 seasons will perform the pregame coin toss. There will also be a pregame tailgate and postgame gathering for football alumni to celebrate Coach Cragg.
