Hobart Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader on the Road

SHARE NOW

The Hobart baseball team swept a doubleheader from Farmingdale State this afternoon. Sophomore pitcher Trevor Kimball limited the Rams to just two hits over six innings as the Statesmen won 9-0. In the night cap, senior Nate Johnson’s speed on the bases goaded Farmingdale State into a throwing error that allowed him to score the winning run in a 3-2 victory.

TOP PERFORMANCES

  • Kimball pitched six innings in the opener, striking out seven without a walk. He allowed just one hit in each of the first two innings and then shut down the home team’s bats.
  • Junior Christian Petry was 2-for-3 on the day with three walks, three runs scored, and two RBIs.
  • Johnson was 2-for-5 with a pair of walks, three stolen bases and three runs.
  • First-year Jack Farnen was 3-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run.

FOR THE RECORD

  • Hobart improved to 3-2 on the season.
  • Farmingdale State fell to 1-4 on the year.

GAME 1 (7 innings)

  • The first five Statesmen reached base in the top of the first inning as the visitors seized the lead early.
  • Johnson led off with a triple and scored on a Petry single.
  • Sophomore Connor Schmiedlin doubled, moving Petry to third.
  • Junior Will Jones walked to load the bases, then sophomore Sean Garvin also walked to bring home Petry.
  • After a lineout to right, Farnen delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Schmiedlin.
  • Hobart scored two more runs on wild pitches.
  • Petry picked up his second RBI of the inning when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • That was all the support that Kimball needed as he faced just two batters over the minimum before turning the ball over to sophomore Jack Byrnes, who pitched a perfect seventh to wrap up the win.

GAME 2 (7 innings)

  • While the Statesmen cruised in the first game, they had to grind out the win in Game 2.
  • Schmiedlin delivered an RBI double in the first, but the Rams tied it in the bottom of the inning.
  • Hobart reclaimed the lead in the fourth when Owen Sanders’ sacrifice bunt brought home Petry.
  • Farmingdale State pulled even again in the bottom of the sixth.
  • In the top of the seventh with one out, Johnson and Petry drew back-to-back walks.
  • The Rams’ pitcher spun to try to pick off Johnson at second. Johnson took off for third while the throw sailed into center field, allowing him to score.
  • Senior Nicholas Franceschi struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh before allowing two hits. He then got the fifth batter to lineout to third to earn the win.

COACH’S CORNER

“Any time you can go on the road and win a series is big, even more so after losing a tough one yesterday. We pitched very well all weekend and our offense is getting going. Scoring six in the first set the tone and I’m proud of the guys for not letting off the gas.  Game 2 today was a dogfight and the tougher team came out on top. I love that we found a way to win a close game.”  — Hobart Head Coach Brad Cook

HOME OPENER … SORT OF

  • Hobart will play its home opener Tuesday, March 11, when the Statesmen take on Elmira. The game will be played on the all-turf field at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
