Hobart Baseball Sweeps Again at McDonough

SHARE NOW

The Hobart baseball team swept a doubleheader at McDonough Park for the second time in as many days on Tuesday. The Statesmen defeated visiting Hilbert 7-5 and 11-6 to run their record to 11-4 overall.

On a cold and blustery day, Hobart scored early and often in both games to extend its winning streak to four games.

GAME 1

The Hawks pushed across a pair of first inning runs to take an early 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Statesmen scored on a Hilbert throwing error, a wild pitch and an RBI single by Nate Garrett. The visitors briefly reclaimed the lead with two more runs in the second, but Hobart answered with another three-run at-bat. This time, the Statesmen scored on a Hilbert error, a passed ball, and a wild pitch.

Garrett had another RBI single in the third inning, extending Hobart’s lead to 7-4.

Pitchers Jake SchulteCharlie Forrest and Nicholas Franceschi limited the Hawks to just a single run over the last five innings. Schulte earned the win, striking out three while allowing four hits and one run over three innings. Franceschi pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to earn his second save of the season.

GAME 2

Hobart starter Cole Tarrant struck out six in four innings of work, allowing two runs on the way to his second win of the season. The Statesmen bullpen added five more strikeouts, matching Hobart’s season-high for strikeouts (11 in 11 innings vs. Gwynedd Mercy).

The Statesmen never trailed in the nightcap, scoring six runs in the first inning. Jack Byrnes delivered the big blow with a three-run double. By the end of the third, the lead had grown to 10-1.

Hilbert (8-9) didn’t give up the fight, but the Hawks couldn’t muster enough runs to wipe out Hobart’s early lead.

Christian PetryEvan Munuz, and Jay Voica each finished with two hits and two RBI.

GIVE ME LIBERTY

Hobart returns to Liberty League play with a three-game series against Rochester (7-7) this week.
