The Hobart baseball team was on the short end of a 9-5 decision at Oswego State this afternoon. The loss drops the Statesmen to 18-16, while the Lakers improved to 23-11.
Senior Nate Johnson was 2-for-4 at the plate for Hobart. He had an RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. Sophomore Sean Garvin was also 2-for-4 and scored a run. Sophomore Connor Schmiedlin added an RBI double.
Emil Sander and Daniel Winchester both went 3-for-5 for Oswego State. Tishawn Featherstone added a solo home run.
Featherstone launched his fifth homer of the season in the first inning off of Hobart starter, senior Ryan Stewart. It was the only run he allowed in three innings of work.
The Lakers rang up five more runs on five hits and a Hobart error in the fourth.
Hobart battled back with runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh to cut Oswego State’s lead to one. Sophomore Jack Byrnes collected the first RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth.
The first three Statesmen reached base to start the sixth. The Lakers gave up a run to turn a double play and then Schmiedlin doubled down the leftfield line to score Johnson to make it 6-3.
Hobart scored two more runs in the seventh, including an RBI single by Johnson.
The Lakers answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning and tacked on another run in the eighth to secure the win.
Hobart will return to McDonough Park for its final three games of the season. The Statesmen are scheduled to play a doubleheader against St. Lawrence at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, and then wrap up the year with a single game against Keystone at 6 p.m. Monday, May 5.
