The Hobart baseball team opened its spring break with a pitchers’ duel against Ursinus at the Ripken Experience’s Griffith Field. The Bears rallied for two runs in the final two innings to post their seventh straight win 2-1.
With the game tied at one in the bottom of the ninth, Ursinus loaded the bases and walked off with the win thanks to Devin Fogg’s RBI single to right.
FOR THE RECORD
- Hobart slips to 4-3 overall.
- Ursinus improved to 11-3.
THE STARTERS
- The Statesmen gave the ball to junior Teck Nash. He gave his team 7 2/3 innings, pounding the strike zone—about 70% of his 109 pitches were strikes—and keeping the Bears off balance.
- He struck out eight while walking only one and allowing just five hits.
- Ursinus starter Kieran Hollander was nearly as impressive, throwing seven innings, scattering six hits and striking out two.
- Both pitchers allowed just one earned run and neither got the decision.
DECISION
- David Morgan (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win for Ursinus.
- Senior Nicholas Franceschi (2-1) took the loss for Hobart.
HOBART STRIKES FIRST
- First-year Jack Farnen worked a walk to lead off the top of the third inning.
- He stole second and third and scored when sophomore Jack Byrnes lifted a sacrifice fly to left field.
BREAKING THROUGH
- Nash seemed to gain strength as the game went on, working a 1-2-3 seventh that included two strikeouts.
- He struck out the leadoff hitter in the eighth and followed that with a ground out, but then the Bears rallied.
- Brandon Sullivan started the comeback with an infield single on a high chopper to second.
- He stole second and then scored on Jakob Cantor’s single down the left field line.
- Junior Max Friedlander came on in relief and induced a ground ball to second to end the eighth.
