Junior Lily Gutch scored a pair of goals to lead the William Smith field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Kean in the opening game of the William Smith Classic Saturday morning. With the win, the Herons improve to 3-2 overall, while the Cougars slip to 1-4.
Gutch fired home a goal in each of the first two quarters, staking the home team to a 2-0 lead at the break. First-year Caroline Kogut tacked on the third goal in the third quarter to complete the day’s scoring. First-year goalie Baker Jeremiah registered her second career shutout, making two saves.
Kean goalie Daniella Maresca registered 14 saves, including five in the second quarter, at the other end of the field.
- William Smith dominated in the final third, outshooting Kean 20-4 for the match.
- In the first quarter, the Herons had a 7-2 shot advantage, breaking through in the 11th minute.
- Senior Rebecca Mantione set up Gutch’s first goal, sending a cross from the right side into the middle of the circle.
- William Smith doubled its lead in the 23rd minute when Gutch finished off a flurry in front of the Cougars’ goal. She fired home a shot from the left slot for her third goal of the season.
- The Herons cashed in on a penalty corner in the 39th minute. Sophomore Kylee Knuschke received the insert and passed it to Kogut at the top of the circle. Kogut sent a screamer to the backboard for a 3-0 lead. It was her third goal of the year.
- The second all-time meeting between the team, William Smith avenged a 3-1 loss to Kean last season.
- The Herons will close out the William Smith Classic at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15 when they take on Lebanon Valley. The Cougars will wrap up their stay in Geneva, taking on St. Lawrence at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
