Challenging first and second quarters hurt Cayuga Community College Women’s Basketball in an away loss to Finger Lakes Community College on Tuesday.
The Spartans fell behind early and couldn’t catch the Lakers in the third and fourth quarters, losing 67-41. Finger Lakes also defeated Cayuga earlier this season at Spartan Hall by four.
“We didn’t shoot well, and Finger Lakes played very well tonight,” said Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici. “We hung in there and kept playing hard, but we just couldn’t get our offense going.”
The Spartans’ defense struggled to contain the Lakers in the first two quarters. Cayuga trailed 17-9 after the first frame, but the Lakers scored 27 in the second quarter to lead 44-18 at the break. Haley Mosch led Cayuga’s offense at halftime with 13 points, and Xavia Evener had seven rebounds.
Cayuga played stronger third and fourth quarters, including outscoring the Lakers in the fourth quarter. Finger Lakes retained a double-digit lead throughout both frames, though.
Mosch finished with 22 points and nine rebounds, Evener had 13 points and 16 rebounds, and Lexi Alberici had six rebounds for the Spartans.
Cayuga is now 7-12 on the season. They are on the road again Saturday, Feb. 8, at SUNY Broome. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
