Cayuga Community College Women’s Basketball led from start to finish in a home win over North Country Community College on Sunday.
The Spartans earned their third straight win behind another strong defensive performance, holding the Saints to 13 combined points in the last two quarters for a 54-32 victory. Cayuga is now 6-8 on the season and 4-6 in Region III play.
Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici said the Spartans did a good job executing a new defense and sharing the ball on offense, registering 16 assists on 26 baskets.
“We didn’t shoot it as well today as we have in other games, but we played tremendous defense. Any time you can hold a team to an average of eight points per quarter, that’s great defense and you give yourself a chance to win,” he said.
Both teams struggled on the offensive end to start the game, with the Spartans carrying a one-point lead into the second quarter. Haley Mosch then sank back-to-back three pointers for Cayuga to help the Spartans start the quarter on a 12-1 run. Cayuga led 32-19 at halftime, with Mosch leading the offense with 15 points.
Cayuga held a double-digit lead for almost all of the third and fourth quarters thanks to a stellar defensive effort. The Spartans limited the Saints to just seven points in the third quarter and six in the fourth.
Mosch finished with 17 points, 16 rebounds and four assists, and Xavia Evener had 13 points, 20 rebounds and two blocks. Lexi Alberici had 12 points, seven assists and two steals.
Cayuga is home again Wednesday, Jan. 22, against Genesee Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
