Cayuga Community College Women’s Basketball fell on the road to a strong Hudson Valley Community College team on Saturday.
The Spartans fell behind in the first quarter by double digits and were unable to catch the Vikings, losing 66-36. The Spartans’ offense was led by Haley Mosch, who finished with 25 points and nine rebounds.
Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici said Hudson Valley’s defense caused problems for the Spartans all game.
“We played hard all game, and we were better from the foul line today than we’ve been for most of the season,” he said. “Hudson Valley is a very good team. They made it uncomfortable for us on the offensive end. We turned the ball over too much, but that’s a credit to their defense.”
The Vikings scored the first 11 points of the game, but Cayuga rallied and stayed close for the rest of the first quarter. A layup by Mosch in the second quarter cut the Vikings’ lead to seven, but Hudson Valley ended the quarter on a 16-3 run to lead by 20 at halftime.
The Spartans’ offense picked up in the third quarter, with Mosch scoring 10 points in the frame. The Vikings maintained a double-digit lead, though, throughout the third and fourth quarters.
Along with Mosch’s nine rebounds, Xavia Evener had eight rebounds and Sierra Murray had five rebounds for Cayuga. Lexi Alberici finished with four assists.
