Cayuga Community College Women’s Basketball fell on the road to #11 Onondaga Community College on Saturday.
Playing against one of the top teams in Region III and in NJCAA Division III, the Spartans stayed close with the Lazers in the first quarter but couldn’t keep pace over the whole game, losing 77-30. Cayuga is now 6-10 on the season and 4-8 in Region III.
Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici said the Spartans played hard and executed their game plan early in the contest, but couldn’t get enough shots to fall throughout the game.
“I’m proud of how hard we played. We started the game playing how we wanted to play, but we couldn’t get anything to fall in the second half of the game,” he said. “OCC is a very good team. We’ll learn from this and be ready for our next game.”
Cayuga’s defense kept them close in the first quarter, with the Lazers holding a single-digit lead by the end of the frame. Cayuga cut Onondaga’s lead to 17-15 in the second quarter, but the Lazers closed on a lengthy run to lead by 18 at halftime. Cayuga’s offense struggled in the third and fourth quarters, and the Lazers led by double-digits the rest of the game.
Haley Mosch led Cayuga with 17 points and three steals while also grabbing seven rebounds. Lexi Alberici had nine points and six assists, Xavia Evener had seven rebounds, and Jada Smith had six rebounds.
The Spartans are on the road again Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Tompkins Cortland Community College. The two teams played earlier in January at Spartan Hall, with Cayuga coming away with the 60-46 win. Wednesday’s tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
