A solid game on both ends of the court gave Cayuga Community College Women’s Basketball a road win over SUNY Broome on Saturday.

The Spartans raced out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and didn’t look back on their way to a 64-32 win over the Hornets. Cayuga also defeated the Hornets earlier this season at Spartan Hall by a 37-33 final.

Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici said the Spartans played excellent defense throughout the game and shared the ball well on offense, finishing with 21 assists.

“I’m very excited about how we played today. We didn’t play well Tuesday, so it was great to see us bounce back with a good game,” said Alberici. “We got control of the game early in the first quarter, and we didn’t really let up the whole game.”

Cayuga started the game on a 12-3 run, with Lexi Alberici’s three three-pointers leading the Spartans to a 14-point advantage after the first frame. A short run by the Hornets cut the margin to single digits in the second quarter, but the Spartans rallied to lead 29-16 at halftime.

Cayuga’s defense dominated the third quarter, holding the Hornets to just five points. The Spartans’ offense had another strong quarter in the third, building the lead to 27. Cayuga retained a 20-point lead throughout the final quarter.

Alberici finished with 18 points on six made three-pointers, four assists, and three steals. Haley Mosch had a triple-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, five blocks and three steals. Xavia Evener had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Jada Smith had eight rebounds.

Cayuga is now 8-12 on the season and 6-10 in Region III play. The Spartans are on the road again Wednesday, Feb. 12, against Genesee Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
