One bad quarter cost Cayuga Community College Women’s Basketball in their opener of the 2024-25 season on Friday.
The Spartans were tied at the half against the Roberts Wesleyan University JV squad, but the Red Hawks dominated the third quarter and came away with the 55-41 win.
Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici praised the Spartans’ effort but said an off-night from the field and turnovers hurt them in their first contest of the season.
“We need to handle some of the pressure better. We had some turnovers and rushed some shots, and the game got away from us,” he said. “Hopefully we can learn from our mistakes and be ready for SUNY Broome on Wednesday.”
The two teams played an even first quarter, with the Spartans pulling ahead on a Haley Mosch three-pointer halfway through the frame. A late Red Hawks three-pointer gave Roberts Wesleyan a 15-13 lead going into the second quarter. Both offenses slowed in the second, with the game entering halftime tied at 22.
The third quarter was all Red Hawks, as they outscored the Spartans 25-6 in the frame to take a 47-28 lead entering the fourth. Cayuga’s defense responded, holding Roberts Wesleyan to only eight points in the final quarter, but they were not able to overcome the deficit.
Xavia Evener led Cayuga with 17 points and 10 rebounds while also blocking two shots. Mosch had 11 points, seven rebounds, and three steals, and Lexi Alberici had 10 points and three rebounds.
Cayuga hosts SUNY Broome to open their regional and conference schedule at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
