The Cayuga Community College Men’s Soccer team saw its impressive season come to a close Saturday with a hard-fought 3–1 loss to #4 Mohawk Valley Community College in the NJCAA North B District Final.
The #3-seeded Spartans struck first at host site Genesee Community College, taking the lead less than five minutes into the match. Aidan Murney delivered a pinpoint pass to Matthew Twigg, whose shot deflected off the right post and into the net to give Cayuga an early advantage.
Mohawk Valley, the defending national champions, equalized in the 24th minute and then pulled ahead with a goal just before halftime. Cayuga battled to stay in the match, with goalkeeper Matthew Chitty turning in an outstanding performance that included multiple diving saves early in the second half. The Hawks, however, sealed the win with their third goal in the 74th minute. Chitty finished the match with four saves.
The loss ends Cayuga’s season with an impressive 11–3 record, marking the second straight year the Spartans reached the regional final. Mohawk Valley advances to the NJCAA Division III National Championship, beginning Nov. 11 at Herkimer College.
