Cayuga Community College Men’s Soccer fell in the NJCAA North A District Finals on Sunday, losing their first match of the season on a late goal by Mohawk Valley Community College.
The top seed entering the regional tournament, the Spartans held a halftime lead against the Hawks only to see Mohawk Valley score a pair of second-half goals to come away with a 2-1 win. Cayuga was ranked second nationally going into the tournament and ended the season with a 15-1 record.
“We gave it our best shot today, just like we have all season. In this match, it just wasn’t enough to get the win,” said Cayuga Coach Chris Davison.
The Hawks and Spartans played evenly for much of the first half before Cayuga’s Charlie Piper scored off an assist from Jacob Botterill. The Spartans held the 1-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Hawks scored quickly to pull even, then took a 2-1 lead with less than 13 minutes to play. Cayuga threatened to tie the match several times in the final minutes but was unable to erase the Hawks’ advantage.
Mohawk Valley, who was ranked seventh nationally entering the regionals, joins Finger Lakes Community College as the teams representing Region III in the national tournament. Nationals are scheduled for Nov. 13-17 at Genesee Community College.
