Cayuga Community College Men’s Soccer earned another huge road win Thursday, rallying from an early deficit to defeat #2 Mohawk Valley Community College.
The #5 Spartans used two goals from top scorer Jake Botterill and a dominating defense led by keeper Major Evans to defeat the Hawks by a 2-1 margin. The win makes Cayuga 5-0 on the season.
The teams traded scoring opportunities early in the first half before the Hawks took a 1-0 lead on a breakaway goal with more than 20 minutes remaining. It was the first goal allowed by Cayuga on the season.
The Spartans responded minutes later, when Botterill scored on a centering pass from Reece Harper, knotting the score at 1. Then, in the closing seconds of the first half, Botterill tallied his second goal, this time on a pass from Bigad Sid.
That goal would prove to be the winning margin. The Hawks repeatedly threatened to tie the match in the second half, only to see Evans and the rest of the Spartans defense foil each scoring attempt. Evans ended the match with four saves.
Thursday’s victory is Cayuga’s second away win over a nationally-ranked team after opening the season with a win over then-#5 Genesee Community College.
Cayuga is back on the road Saturday at SUNY Broome before playing their next six matches at home. Kickoff against SUNY Broome is scheduled for 3 p.m.
