A strong second half helped Cayuga Community College Men’s Soccer earn a road win over Jefferson Community College on Wednesday.
The #3 Spartans held a slim 1-0 lead at halftime before erupting for three goals in the second half on their way to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Cannoneers. The win pushes Cayuga to a 9-2 record on the season and a 9-1 mark in Region III play.
Cayuga took the lead early when sophomore Joseph Edet scored off an assist from Matthew Twigg and Matthew Manton just six minutes into the match, but neither team scored again in the first frame.
The Spartans pushed the score to 2-0 early in the second half when Zander Wishart scored off an assist from Twigg and Aidan Murney. Cayuga put the match away later with a goal from Murney and a second score from Wishart.
Wishart finished with two goals, and Twigg, Manton, and Maxwell Bedford each had two assists. Goalie Matthew Chitty had five saves and registered the team’s seventh shutout win.
Cayuga is currently ranked third in NJCAA Division III and is in second place in Region III, trailing Finger Lakes Community College. The Spartans close out the regular season on Saturday, October 18, with a home match against North Country Community College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
