A second-half rally by Cayuga Community College Men’s Basketball was enough to force overtime but not enough to earn the home win against SUNY Broome on Wednesday.
The Spartans stormed back from a double-digit deficit in the second half to push the Hornets into overtime but ultimately fell 61-59. The game was Cayuga’s first in Region III and Mid-State Athletic Conference play this season and drops their record to 0-2.
Cayuga’s offense struggled out of the gate against the Hornets’ defense. Trailing 21-8 with 10 minutes left to play in the first half, the Spartans managed to chip away at SUNY Broome’s lead and entered halftime down 34-24.
The second half saw the Spartans increase their defensive pressure on the Hornets and reach the foul line more often on the offensive end. Free throws from guards Wylik Coleman, Gerod Jackson and Rashawn Williams cut into the Hornets’ advantage before a three-pointer from Williams tied the score with minutes to play. The teams entered overtime knotted at 57, but Cayuga only managed two points in the extra frame.
Forward Tony Borges recorded a double-double for the Spartans, finishing the game with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Christian Gomez had 11 points, four steals, three assists and three rebounds, and Williams and Jackson both had nine points. Forward Solomon Mitchell had eight points and six rebounds.
Cayuga is on the road on Saturday, Nov. 9, against Corning Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
