Cayuga Community College Women’s Basketball picked up a road win against Tompkins Cortland Community College on Wednesday behind 20-point performances from Lexi Alberici and Haley Mosch.

The Spartans raced out to an early lead before fighting off a Panthers’ rally in the third and fourth quarters, eventually earning a 55-43 win. It’s Cayuga’s second of the season against the Panthers after a 60-46 win at Spartan Hall earlier in January.

“We played with a lot of composure tonight, especially when they cut the lead to four in the third and fourth quarters,” said Cayuga Coach Jim Alberici. “This was a big win for us, on the road with a lot of noise in the gym. I’m proud of the way we regrouped, shot well and took care of the ball.”

The Spartans started strong on both ends of the floor, limiting the Panthers to just six first-quarter points while building a 10-point lead. Cayuga led by 12 at halftime, with Mosch and Alberici combining to make six three-pointers in the first two quarters.

The Panthers ran out eight straight points in the third quarter to cut Cayuga’s lead to 28-24, but the Spartans rebounded with a jumper from Morgan Jones and a three-pointer from Mosch. Leading by six going into the final quarter, Alberici and Mosch connected on back-to-back threes to increase Cayuga’s lead to 12. The Spartans made nine free throws in the final three minutes to secure the win.

Alberici led Cayuga with 21 points while also contributing 10 rebounds and five assists. Mosch had 20 points, 15 rebounds and four assists, and Xavia Evener had seven points and nine rebounds. Jones finished with six points and four rebounds, and Sierra Murray had nine rebounds.

The Spartans are 7-10 on the season and 5-8 in Region III. Cayuga is on the road Saturday, Feb. 1, at Fulton-Montgomery Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
