Three members of the Hobart football team were named to the 2024 Academic All-District Football Teams as selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC). Senior offensive lineman Ethan Kowalski (Lancaster/Lancaster, N.Y.), junior punter Vicente Lyon (Yorktown/Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and junior offensive lineman Quinn Broggy (Syosset/Syosset, N.Y.) were recognized for their exceptional efforts on the gridiron and in the classroom.
To earn Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5. On the field, nominees must compete in 90% of the team’s games or start 66% of the team’s games.
Each Academic All-District honoree is considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. Kowalski and Lyon will represent Hobart on this year’s Academic All-America ballot.
A three-time Academic All-District selection, Kowalski is majoring in economics and management and entrepreneurship. He was a semifinalist for the 2024 Campbell Trophy, which is the top academic award in college football. Kowalski is also a three-time Liberty League All-Academic Team selection and a two-time Arnold Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award winner.
A starter in all 11 games this season, Kowalski earned first-team All-Liberty League and first-team D3football.com All-Region praise. The guard led an offensive line that ranked 13th in the nation in tackles for loss allowed (3.55/g) and led the Liberty League in sacks allowed (1.09/g). Hobart was second in the Liberty League in rushing offense (159.8 yds/g) as Kowalski and Broggy cleared the way for the conference’s only 1,000-yard rusher.
A two-time Liberty League All-Academic pick, Lyon is a computer science and management and entrepreneurship major.
One of the top punters in the nation, Lyon was tabbed an All-American by the Associated Press (1st team) and D3football.com (3rd team). He finished the season fourth in the nation in punting average at a Hobart season record 43.6 yards. Lyon earned a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week three times and was voted the Liberty League Special Teams Player of the Week three times this season. Lyon produced his most impressive numbers of the year in Hobart’s win over Ithaca. He averaged a Statesmen single-game record 65.0 yards per punt (4-260), including a record 86-yard punt. Lyon finished the season with 10 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and 10 punts that covered 50 yards or more.
Through 20 games, Lyon is averaging 40.64 yards per punt, ahead of the Hobart record 39.2 set by Rio Schmidt ’18.
A two-time Academic All-District honoree, Broggy is a history major. He is also a two-time Liberty League All-Academic pick and a 2023-24 Arnold Scholar-Athlete Award winner.
An All-Liberty League honorable mention, Broggy played in 10 games this season, starting nine. The center helped Hobart rush for a season-high 232 yards against Rochester. The Statesmen line did not allow a sack in wins over Keystone, Union and Rochester.
Hobart went 9-2 this season, winning the Liberty League with a perfect 6-0 record. The Statesmen earned their 11th NCAA playoff bid, facing No. 6 Susquehanna in the second round. After a slow start, Hobart rallied but ultimately fell to the River Hawks 42-35. The Statesmen received votes in both the final AFCA poll and the D3football.com Top 25.
