For the 28th time in program history, the Penn Yan Academy boys lacrosse team lifted a championship trophy at the conclusion of the Section Five tournament. The Mustangs latest triumph came Monday night at Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva as the #1 seed in the Class D tournament defeated the #3 seed Bloomfield-Honeoye 19-6. It is Penn Yan’s 28th championship in boys lacrosse, a feat that goes unmatched in team sports throughout Section Five.
The Mustangs were led by tournament MVP Teagen Fingar, who scored five goals and dished out five assists. Teammate Tukker Fisher added five goals and two assists, Braden Fingar and Miles Ditzell each scored three goals and Mike Gigliotti found the back of the net twice and dished out an assist. Collin Bacher also scored for the Mustangs, while Grayson Hathway and Cole Murphy added assists.
Senior goalie Will Thompson, who is having a great season between the pipes, had another outstanding game in goal, and was named to the All-Tournament team.
Bloomfield-Honeoye played in the programs first-ever Sectional championship game in lacrosse and landed the game first goal, a score from Brayden Arber less than two minutes into the game. Penn Yan would go on to score three unanswered goals over the next two minutes and never looked back.
Brennan Thomas and Tyler Bruder both scored two goals for Bloomfield-Honeoye, while Caleb Beadnell added a goal and John Blair had three assists. Goalie Ethan Stoddard had a busy night in goal and made 13 saves. Bloomfield-Honeoye finished the season with a 13-5 record.
With the win, Penn Yan ventures back to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament. It begins Wednesday against the Section 6 champion Akron, who defeated East Aurora 18-11 in the Section 6 Class D championship showdown. This will be the seventh time the two schools have played to see who has the right to advance in the tournament. Penn Yan holds a 4-2 lead with Akron having won the last meeting in 2022 by a score of 12-11.
Wednesday’s game will be played at 7:30 p.m. at Canandaigua Academy. It will be broadcast live on Finger Lakes Country, WFLR.
