Yates Legislature Approves Additional Soil to Be Removed at Project Site

Meeting in a special session on Friday, the Yates County Legislature approved using $300,000 from the project contingency line to pay DiFiore Construction for additional unsuitable soil removal at the site of the new Highway, Office of Emergency Services, and Public Health facility in Benton.

Highway Superintendent Doug Rapalee told legislators the area of concern is under the current plow barn.

“From the estimates we have been provided by DiFiore, I think we are looking at over 3,000 yards at the $70 per cubic yard. So their estimate they are giving us, worst case scenario we believe is about $275,000. We are asking for $300,000 to play it a little safe in case we run into something else.”

The unsuitable soils will be taken to a dump site where DiFiore deems to dump it. If it is found to be contaminated, it will be stored on-site until it is tested.

Rapalee added the canopy for the fuel island at the new site was being worked on Friday. The new tanks, which are filled with fuel, are in place and they should be pulling electric next week. Rapalee is hoping the county will be switched over to the new fuel island by the end of next week.
