Yates County Urges Congress to Protect SNAP and HEAP Funding

SHARE NOW

The Yates County Legislature is urging Congress to protect funding for two key federal assistance programs that help families afford food and heat.

Lawmakers this week approved a resolution asking Congress to maintain funding for the SNAP and HEAP programs, warning that without action, benefits could be disrupted as early as Saturday. County officials say any lapse in funding would hit low-income residents hard and create major challenges for local social service agencies that administer the programs. The Legislature also noted that SNAP and HEAP dollars support local grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and small businesses — meaning a cutoff would hurt the wider economy as well.

Legislature Chair Leslie Church will send a letter to federal and state leaders, including Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, and Governor Kathy Hochul, urging them to act quickly to prevent service interruptions.
