This week, the Yates County Sheriff’s Office is taking part in a targeted program with the goal of reducing speed-related crashes. During this campaign organized by the Governors Traffic Safety Committee, special attention and enforcement efforts will be paid to speed-related violations. Sheriff Frank Ryan said this is a high-visibility campaign aimed at reducing the incidence of speed-related crashes.

“Each day we encounter many special hazards on our roadways including weather conditions, bicycles, pedestrians, and buggies,” said Sheriff Ryan. “Speeding increases the chances of having a crash and is never worth the few seconds or minutes that one might save when traveling. Please do all you can do to ensure that everyone can travel and reach their destinations safely.”

According to the Traffic Safety Committee, speed continues to be a predominant factor in traffic crashes in New York State. In 2023, 31 percent of all fatal crashes in New York were caused by speeding. 314 people lost their lives and 2,208 suffered serious injuries in these preventable collisions. The number of fatal crashes caused by unsafe speed increases during the summer months. 48% of the speed-related fatal and personal injury crashes happened between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.
