SHARE NOW

Two Yates County men were among 100 older adults honored in Albany this week by the New York State Office for the Aging for making their communities a better place for all through their volunteer and civic engagement efforts.  Rodger Francis, Robert Gillespie, and the other honorees were recognized for their support of charitable causes, their work with local health care and human services organizations, grassroots civic contributions, volunteer work with emergency management corps, local fundraising activities, and more.

From the New York State Office for the Aging:

“From his leadership roles in the Kiwanis Club of Penn Yan to the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital, where he serves on the board of directors, Rodger Francis’ impact resonates deeply. He has been a driving force on the board of directors for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Yates County and has lent his expertise to various advisory boards at regional and state levels.

Francis is a member of the Penn Yan United Methodist Church and has served as church auditor, vice chairman of the Staff Parish Relations Committee, and currently as treasurer of the board of trustees. Through the church, he has helped with Thanksgiving baskets and the Yates Christmas Program. He is currently also delivering meals with Yates County Office for the Aging and has done so for 12 years.

Hailing from a farming background in Southern Cayuga County, Francis’ journey led him to academic achievements at SUNY Cobleskill and Murray State University. During his time at college, he met his wife, Nancy, with whom he has shared 52 years of marriage and raised two accomplished children.

Beyond his professional endeavors as a loan officer for farm credit, Francis’ true passion lies in giving back to his community. Volunteering has been a constant thread in his life.

“Volunteering is a grateful way of giving back to your community,” he says. “I have met many interesting people from all walks of life. It is a rewarding experience assisting and helping other people.”

As a founding member of the Yates County Prison Ministry and a dedicated art instructor, Robert Gillespie’s contributions have touched the lives of many, providing support and guidance to those in need.

A talented artist and educator, Gillespie’s murals and educational initiatives have enriched the cultural landscape of the Finger Lakes region, showcasing his passion for storytelling and community enrichment. Whether it’s promoting environmental awareness or supporting mental health services, his advocacy work reflects his deep-seated values of empathy and social justice.

Through the Yates County Prison Ministry, Gillespie leads Bible discussion groups and coordinates the Yates Christmas Program for inmates’ children. Gillespie has painted over 20 historically themed murals within the Finger Lakes Region, from Utica to Hammondsport. As Cornell Cooperative Extension of Yates County board member and president, Gillespie has worked with the agricultural community to improve land use management, promoting water quality and green energy initiatives. As National Alliance on Mental Health chapter secretary and treasurer, he is involved in efforts to support families as they try to navigate various mental health services. In 2005, Gillespie founded Watkins Glen Green Grand Prix, which promotes environmentally friendly vehicles, by conducting educational activities and competitive events for auto-tech students and the public.
