A resolution brought before the Yates County Legislature on Monday called on the Governor to remove from her proposed 2024 Executive Budget “Part M” of the Real Property Tax Law, which seeks to require municipalities to give excess money to a prior owner of real property sold by the municipality after taking over the title. District Four Legislator William Holgate explained why he’s against the Governor’s plan.
The resolution added it would be practically impossible for a county to accurately account for all administrative costs associated with administering enforcement of taxes for thousands of parcels during a two-year time period involving subcontractors and staff from multiple departments.
The resolution passed by an 8-5 vote. Voting in favor was: William Holgate, Patrick Killen, Bonnie Percy, Douglas Paddock, Timothy Cutler, Edward Bronson, Dan Banach, and Leslie Church. Legislators voting against it were: Carlie Chilson, Jesse Jayne, Terry Button, Richard Willson, and Richard Harper.
A certified copy of the resolution will be sent to the Governor.
