The Yates County Legislature voted Monday to recommend the addition of nearly 500 acres of farmland to the county’s Agricultural District #1.
The action follows a 30-day application period that ended November 30, 2025, during which landowners were allowed to request inclusion of viable agricultural land under New York State Agriculture and Markets Law. County officials say six requests were submitted, covering eight parcels totaling 493.6 acres. The impacted properties can be found below.
Those requests were reviewed by the Yates County Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board, which approved the additions and forwarded its recommendation to the legislature. With Monday’s vote, the county is now formally recommending that the New York State Commissioner of Agriculture accept the parcels into Agricultural District #1.
Officials noted the review also satisfies the district’s annual review requirement, which will next resume during the regular review period in November 2026.
Agricultural districts provide participating landowners with certain protections and benefits intended to support and preserve active farmland across the county.
