A number of Yates County businesses are being recognized for appropriately refusing to sell tobacco to persons under the age of 21.
The Yates Prevention Coalition and Yates County Public Health say that the retailers that were in compliance with the New York State Adolescent Tobacco Use Prevention Act between July and September helped delay the onset of tobacco use by our youth, preventing respiratory problems, lifelong addiction, and early death.
The following Yates County businesses appropriately refused to sell tobacco to someone under age 21 during the period July through September 2023:

Byrne Dairy in Penn Yan
Dandy Mini Mart in Dundee
Dollar General in Dundee
Dollar General in Penn Yan
Family Dollar in Dundee
Keuka Corner Convenience in Jerusalem
Lakes Gas in Penn Yan
Morgan’s Grocery Store in Penn Yan
Penn Yan Express Stop in Penn Yan
Quick Shoppe in Dundee
Red Apple Kwik Fill in Penn Yan
7-Eleven in Penn Yan
In a statement, Public Health and the Yates Prevention Coalition said “Compliance is caring.” They added by not selling tobacco products to underage youth the businesses in compliance:
- Provide a caring adult presence and role model in our neighborhoods.
- Create safe spaces for youth in our neighborhoods.
- Demonstrate they value and respect our youth.
- Take responsibility for monitoring young people’s behavior and encourage them to do their best.
