Yates County has a new public defender. At a special meeting on Monday, the Yates County Legislature appointed Matthew Tantillo as public defender. Steve Hampsey, who had been the county’s Public Defender, resigned at the end of July and will continue his private practice in Penn Yan while also working full-time as Steuben County’s Assigned Counsel Administrator.
“Steve is a great guy and great attorney,” said Yates County Administrator Jessica Mullins. “We are grateful that we were able to have him as our Public Defender as long as we did. It’s nice to know he is still practicing in the area helping Yates County folks! Matt will be a great addition to the leadership team here at the County and I look forward to working with him in the future.”
Tantillo has been an Assistant Public Defender with Yates County since 2021. Prior to that, he had prior experience in Public Defender and District Attorney offices in the Finger Lakes area.
