At a special meeting of the Watkins Glen School Board of Education, James (Jamie) Harter was appointed as the Interim Principal of Watkins Glen High School. At Monday’s meeting, the Board said Harter will be joining the high school as soon as possible to begin working with students, staff, and families.
Harter will replace Kyle Colunio, who was appointed as the next superintendent of schools with the South Seneca School District two weeks ago.
The district said Harter brings a wealth of experience to this role, having served as the Interim Assistant Principal of Watkins Glen High School in 2023 and as the Interim Assistant Principal at Watkins Glen Elementary School for the entirety of the 2023-24 school year. Most recently, he served as the Interim Athletic Director at the Horseheads Central School District.
Harter has devoted nearly 40 years to developing students and supporting their success in academics, athletics, and life. His career began after earning a degree in Physical Education from SUNY Brockport, followed by a master’s degree in Sports Psychology and Education from Ithaca College.
No stranger to the Watkins Glen Central School District, Harter joined Watkins Glen as a physical education teacher and coach. After 11 years in the classroom, he pursued an administrative path, earning his School District Administrator certification from Canisius College in 1996. He later served in various administrative roles, including as Superintendent at Charlotte Valley Central School.
His contributions to Section IV athletics are extensive, including his instrumental role in expanding girls’ golf across New York State. Since 2009, he has served as the NYSPHSAA State Coordinator for Girls’ Golf, overseeing state championships and advocating for the sport’s growth. Additionally, he has held leadership positions on the Section IV Executive Committee, NYSPHSAA Championship Advisory Committee, and NYSAAA Executive Board. He was also inducted into the Section IV Hall of Fame.
