The Village of Watkins Glen is mourning the loss of its mayor, Laurie DeNardo, who passed away on Tuesday at her home following a 10-month battle with cancer. She was 64.

Village officials announced her passing Tuesday, lowering flags to half-staff in her honor and remembering her as a devoted leader, community advocate, and lifelong resident whose impact will be felt for years to come.

Born November 28, 1961, in Montour Falls, DeNardo spent her life in Watkins Glen and built a career defined by public service and leadership. She began working at the Schuyler County DMV before joining Cornell University’s veterinary school. Over a 40-year career, she rose through the ranks to become Director of Human Resources, earning a reputation for strong leadership, budgeting expertise, and dedication to her colleagues.

DeNardo’s commitment to her community extended well beyond her professional career. She served eight years as a village trustee beginning in 2015 before being sworn in as mayor in March 2023. In that role, officials say she brought professionalism, integrity, and a collaborative approach to leadership, helping advance projects that strengthened the village both operationally and financially.

She was also active in numerous local organizations, including St. Mary’s of the Lake Church, the Watkins Glen Elks, Lions and Moose Clubs, the Schuyler Health Foundation, Watkins Glen Promotions, and the Watkins Glen Waterfront Festival. She also served as co-chair of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative.

Village leaders described DeNardo as thoughtful, compassionate, and deeply committed to preserving the character of Watkins Glen. They said her ability to listen, research issues, and communicate clearly made her a trusted advocate for residents.

Outside of her public life, DeNardo enjoyed boating, local music, and volunteering. Her family says her greatest joy was being a mother and grandmother.
