Firefighters from three counties were called to the scene of a working barn fire just outside of the village of Dundee late Monday night.
At around 10:20 p.m., Yates County 911 received a phone call from a resident saying they heard a loud explosion and could see flames in the distance. Moments later, a Yates County Sheriff’s Deputy confirmed a working barn fire at 1522 State Route 230 in the area of the Dutch Kuntry Store. A neighboring barn on the property owned by Gerald and Harold Zimmerman also caught on fire with one of the structures collapsing.
The fire was brought under control at 11:26 p.m. A source on the scene confirmed no animals were vacant at the time of the fires.
In addition to the Dundee fire department, Penn Yan, Himrod, Wayne, Tyrone, Watkins Glen, Hammondsport, and Benton fire companies provided manpower and equipment to the scene. The Dresden and Branchport-Keuka Park Fire Departments provided standby. Dundee Ambulance, State Police, and the Yates County Office of Emergency Management also responded. The Town of Barrington’s excavator also was requested to the scene.
The Yates County Fire Investigation Team was also called to the scene and is working on determining the cause.
