The Penn Yan school was closed on Tuesday after the district received two voicemails from someone making threats against the school.
As a result of these threats, school officials decided to close school for the day. Officers identified the phone number that left the voicemails and traced it back to a Penn Yan student. Penn Yan Police went to the 14-year-old’s home and brought them and their parents to the police department for an interview. Police Chief Thomas Dunham said the student admitted to making the calls and will be charged as a juvenile with two felony counts of making a terroristic threat.
“These incidents are not taken lightly and anyone found making threats of this nature will face the full consequences of the law and school disciplinary process,” said Chief Dunham.
The Penn Yan Police Department worked with school authorities, the Yates County Sheriff’s Office and State Police to ensure all students, faculty, and the community were safe.
