UPDATE: 2:20 p.m. Both individuals have been found on the eastern shoreline of Seneca Lake and are safe. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
Law enforcement and first responders launched a search on Seneca Lake Saturday for two people last seen on kayaks near Long Point Road in the town of Torrey.
The Yates County Sheriff’s Office says a man and woman, both believed to be in their early 30s, entered the Salvation Army Camp on Long Point Road near the Dining Hall just before 8 a.m. A short time later, the pair were reported in the water near neighboring properties on two blue and white kayaks. Camp staff who encountered the two told deputies both appeared to be intoxicated before leaving the grounds. Sheriff’s Department personnel on scene lost visual of the two kayaks after they got into the middle of the lake. Searches of both shorelines for the kayaks have so far led to no results.
As of 2 p.m., there had been no reports of kayakers who went out on the lake this morning and had not returned. Law enforcement on scene said all they have to go on at this time is a video and photos of the kayakers.
Search crews from the Yates and Schuyler Sheriff’s Office, Branchport-Keuka Park and Himrod Fire Departments, along with assistance from Onondaga County’s Air One helicopter and LifeNet have spent the day combing the lake. Penn Yan Ambulance also responded
